Panagia Tinou

The Church of Annunciation (Panagia Tinou or Evaggelistiria) is one of the most important religious centers of Orthodoxy worldwide and the most frequent pilgrimage destination within Greece. The island of Tinos is inextricably linked to the Church of Virgin Mary (Panagia). Whoever has the experience of visiting it, can understand how deep is the relationship between Tinians and the church and what’s more, how strongly they believe and how deeply they love Panagia. In place of the Church of Evangelistrias, there existed a Byzantine church of St. John the Baptist, which, as it was said, was burned in the Saracen pirate raids, while, in antiquity, the ancient temple was dedicated to Dionysus.

Zohodohou Pigis Church

In the Zohodohou Pigis Church, known as Evresi (=Discovery), you can see the exact point where the Sacred Icon was found. During excavations for Finding the icon, they discovered ruins of an ancient temple and they decided -even before finding the icon- that a church should be built in that location. The Holy water is flowing from a fountain located in the church, beside the point where the icon was found. In the church baptismal fonts (two for infants and one for adults), hundreds of baptisms take place, each year. In the middle area of the Evresi Church, part of the earlier church of St. John the Baptist still exists. On January 30th, the Finding of the miraculous Icon (the custom of Fanarakia-Lanterns) is celebrated.

Cultural Foundation of Tinos (I.TI.P.)

The purpose of this institute (I.TI.P) is the research, study and promotion of the history, art, culture and tradition of Tinos.

Archaeological Museum of Tinos

The Archaeological Museum of Tinos was built in the 1960s at the expense of the Archaeological Society, on the main road of Chora leading to the church of Our Lady of the Annunciation (Panagia). Until today, the architectural structure is kept intact, with the museological data of that era bringing up interesting and “nostalgic” memories.

Temple of Poseidon and Amfitriti

The establishment and expansion of Temple of Poseidon and Amfitriti dates from the period of domination of the Macedonians in the Cyclades (4th century BC). The sanctuary gaining nationwide fame and culminating in the 3rd century was a magnet for pilgrims, even beyond the boundaries of Greece, such as southern Italy, Asia Minor and Africa.
